Cultural Village of Europe 2006
The German village Ströbeck has 1150 inhabitants and a lot of very old trees.
One of these trees, an oak, has been planted after the news that Napoleon had been banned to St Helena. In his marsh to Russia, Napoleon took a lot of young men from Ströbeck that never returned.
A lot of the history and the wars of Europe you will find in the history of Ströbeck.
Ströbeck is the only place in Europe where the pupil learn chess at school (obliged). They know the game since 1000 years.
There is a Chessmuseum as well as an living Chess-group.
