Wine Meeting on Paxos
A meeting of all the wine makers of Paxos and Antipaxos took place in the afternoon of the 28th of January 2005 in Gaios.
Mrs Sophie Rusconi, who recently completed a scientific essay on the Antipaxos vineyards on behalf of the University of Bourgoundie and Mr Dimitris Provatas, a finance specialist of the Agricultural Bank of Greece, specializing on agricultural and local development matters, author of the recently published "Calendar of Corfu wine" were invited by the Municipality of Paxos to speak at the meeting.
The possibilities of restructuring, reviving and further developing the Antipaxos vineyards were seriously discussed.
The specialists commented on the importance of the Antipaxos vineyards from a historical, financial and environmental point of view and claimed there are serious possibilities of reviving the vineyards with local varieties, of building a small distillery on Paxos and marketing the local products especially during the summer months when tourism brings larger numbers of clients on the island.
The local wine makers were very interested on the idea and the Paxos Mayor Mr Spyros Bogdanos officially expressed his wholehearted support on behalf of the Municipality in every way, so that the project will be a success.
The Mayor has already sent an official request to the General Secretary of the Prefecture for more information about a similar, - already successful - program in the island of Santorini, which could be used as a model in the pursuit of scientific, technical advice and financial support for a relevant project in Paxos.
